海に親しむ機会を！

海が身近にある海士町。現在70~90代の方にお話をお聞きすると、小学生だった頃は学校が終われば友達や上級生たちとみんなで海に行って舟に乗っていたとのこと。変な方へ進んだり、落ちたりしながら乗り方を覚えて…それほど普段の遊びの中に海が溶け込んでいたそう。

現在は船外機などの機械を動力とした船が主流となり、地元で舟の漕ぎ方などを教えられるような人は年々減るばかりで、昔と比べると海との関わりが減ってしまっている現状もあります。10年ほど前までは、海士町立福井小学校の授業の中でヨット教室があったそうですが、とはいえ福井小の生徒という限られた人だけ。

しかし、いま海士町では海に親しむ機会を増やそうとする様々な活動が始動しています！

海の士を育む会が設立

2022年1月14日、海の士（ひと）を育む会が設立されました。この団体は、海に関する体験や教育を通じて、あらゆる世代の人々に海士町の海や文化に親しむ機会を提供する活動を行う団体です。

以前から、せっかく海に囲まれた島なのに、海に親しむ機会がないのがもったいないという声が多くあがっていた海士町。どうにかできないかなと考えていたところ、偶然、木造ヨット製作の専門家で冒険家のハワード・ライスさんが海士町移住してくるとの話が！そこで、なにか一緒に活動できないだろうかと相談を重ねていく中で、この団体が設立されました。

日本財団の海と日本プロジェクトの支援を受け、団体の運営にはハワードさんだけでなく、海士町豊田地区の山下さん（会長）、宇受賀地区の村尾さん（副会長）、一般財団法人島前ふるさと魅力化財団など、多くの海士町のみなさんが携わっています。

海士町内にいくつか拠点があり、その一つがシェアオフィス（リモートワーク交流施設）1階。

ここで作業している人がいるときは誰でも見学できるそうです！しかも、ハワードさんにお願いすれば、目の前に広がる諏訪湾でカヌーに乗れちゃいます。

海が身近になるこんな取り組みが

各プロジェクトを担当しているリーダーのみなさんに、どんなプロジェクトなのか教えてもらいました！

1．ヨット模型作り教室

ボートの木製模型作りを通じて、海への関心を高め、工作技術の習得や趣味や交流の場を提供します。2022年3月に実施しました。

2．「かんこ舟」復活プロジェクト

島前高校と連携して、生徒が島内の方からかんこ舟について聞き取りをし、交流・繋がりを生みながら知識と伝統を継承できるよう目指します。また、使われなくなったかんこ舟を修復して、漕ぎ方を地域の方から習うなどを通じ、地域の暮らしや文化と海の関わりを再発見していきます。

３．ヨットによるアドベンチャー体験

ヨットを通して海を楽しもう！という企画です。具体的には、製作したカヌーやヨットで海と自然の中を探検&キャンプすることを通して、海洋保全、潮流や風、操船など、海にまつわる実践型の総合教育を行います。

今年の7月には、小学生向けのヨット操船教室を2回開催しました！

4．GPS付ミニボートプロジェクト

GPS付きMini-boatを制作し、外洋に流し追跡する過程で、海流やボートの仕組みを包括的に学ぶSTEAM（科学・技術・工学・芸術・数学）教育を取り入れた、Mini-boatプロジェクトが夏休み明けの９月から島前高校生と連携し本格始動します！！

5．ヨット作り教室

ハワードさんのもとで、カヌーを自分たちで一から作るプロジェクトです。2〜4人で１つのグループになり、一隻のカヌーを作製します。カヌーの構造や木工技術を、実際に作業をしながら学ぶことができます。

山下さん：50年以上漁師を続けていますが、やっぱり海は楽しいです。海士町にいて海のことを知らないだなんてもったいなさすぎる。だからこそ、小中高生にはこんなにも近くにある海を、もっと身近に感じてもらって興味を持ってほしいです。そのために、子どもたちが行きたくなるような施設も作れたら良いなと思っています。漁師になりたい、海士町に住みたい、住み続けたい、そう思ってもらえるような活動をしていきたいです。

村尾さん：小さなころから慣れ親しんだかんこ舟が、50年経った今、修復され色んな人に使ってもらえていることがとても嬉しいです。私だけでなく、宇受賀地区のみんなも喜んでいます。いずれかは、乗りたいと思う人ならだれでも使える状態にできるのが理想です。海へ出て、スカッとする感覚をぜひたくさんの人に味わってもらいたいですね。

ハワードさん：島に住んでいても海と関わる機会が少ない海士町。かんこ船は50年もの間、放置されていました。私のボートづくり技術を生かし色んなプロジェクトを通して、子どもたちには実際に体験してもらうことで、海でいろんな気づきを得てほしいです。また、地元の人たちにはその技術を伝えて海文化をもっと盛り上げられたら嬉しいです。もっとたくさんの人が海士町に来てくれることを願っています。

おわりに
海に親しむ機会がこれからどんどん増えていきそうですね。海士町のみなさんにとっても、海の新たな一面に出会えるかもしれません。今後の「海の士を育む会」の活動に注目です！

More opportunities to get close to the sea!

Ama Town is close to the sea. When I spoke with people who are now in their 70s to 90s, they told me that when they were in elementary school, they used to go to the sea with their friends after school and ride on a boat together. They learned how to ride the boat through going in strange directions and falling off...the sea was such an integral part of their daily play.

Until about 10 years ago, Ama Town's Fukui Elementary School offered classes on how to sail a boat, but only to a limited group of students.

Now, however, various activities are underway in Ama Town to increase opportunities for people to become more familiar with the sea!

The Group for Nurturing People of the Sea

On January 14, 2022, the Group for Nurturing People of the Sea  was established. This organization is dedicated to providing opportunities for people of all ages to become familiar with the ocean and culture of Ama Town through hands-on ocean-related experiences and education.

For some time now, many people have voiced their concern that it is a shame that there are few opportunities for people to get familiar with the sea, despite the fact that the island is surrounded by the sea. As some people were thinking of ways to do something about this, Howard Rice, a famous yachtsman, was moving to Ama Town! Then, they consulted with him to see if there was anything they could do together, and this organization was established.

With the support from  the Nippon Foundation, the organization is managed not only by. Howard-san but also by many Ama residents, including Mr. Yamashita (President) from the Toyota district of Ama Town, Mr. Murao (Vice President) from the Uzuka district, and the Dozen Furusato Miryokuka Foundation.

The organization works at  several locations in Ama Town, one of which is on the first floor of a shared office (remote work exchange facility).

Anyone can come and see this place when someone is working here! Moreover, if you ask Howard-san, you can take a canoe ride in Suwa Bay, which stretches out before you.

Here's what's happening / going on!

We asked the leaders in charge of each project to tell us what kind of projects they are working on!

1. Boat model making class

Through the making of wooden models of boats, this program aims to increase interest in the sea, acquire craft skills, and provide a place for hobbies and social interaction.

2. "Kanko Boat" Revival Project

In cooperation with Dozen High School, students will interview people on the island about Kanko boats, and aim to pass on knowledge and traditions while promoting exchanges and connections among various generations. In addition, by restoring a disused Kanko boat and learning how to row it from local people, students will rediscover the relationship between local life, culture, and the sea.

Kanko boat is a small Japanese boat without sails, operated by Ro (yuloh) and oars, which have been handed down in the Oki region for a long time.

3. Adventure experience by boat

This is a project to enjoy the ocean through sailing. Specifically, through exploration and camping in the ocean and nature in canoes and sailboats that have been built, the project will provide practical, comprehensive education related to the ocean, such as marine conservation, currents, winds, and ship operation.

This past July, the group held sailing class twice for elementary school students!

4. Mini-boat with GPS project

The Mini-boat project, which incorporates STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) education to comprehensively learn about ocean currents and boat mechanisms in the process of building and tracking a mini-boat with GPS in the open sea, will start in September after the summer break in collaboration with Dozen High School students! 

5. Boat building class

In this project, participants work in groups of two to four to build a canoe from scratch with Howard-san. Participants will learn about canoe construction and woodworking techniques while actually working on the project.

Looking to the future

I have been a fisherman for over 50 years, but I still enjoy the sea. It would be a shame to be in Ama Town without t knowing about the sea. That is why I want elementary, junior high, and high school students to feel familiar with the ocean, which is so close by, and become more interested in it. To that end, I hope to create facilities that children will want to visit. I would like to conduct activities that will make people want to become fishermen, live in Ama Town, and continue to live there.

Mr. Murao, Vice President
I am very happy that the Kanko boat that I have been familiar with since I was a child about 50 years ago, has been restored and is used by many people now. Not only me, but also everyone in the Uzuka area is happy. Ideally, the boat will eventually be made available to anyone who wants to ride it. I hope that many people will be able to go out to the sea and experience the refreshing sensation of being out on the water.

Mr. Howard
Even though people live on the island, they don't have many opportunities to get involved with the sea. The Kanko boats have been abandoned for 50 years. I would like the children to experience and learn about the sea through various projects using my boat-building skills. I would also be happy if I could pass on my skills to the local people to further promote the culture of the sea. I hope that more people will come to Ama Town.

It seems that there will be more and more opportunities to become familiar with the sea. Even for people on the island, they may be able to encounter a new aspect of the sea. All eyes will be on the future activities of the "Group for  Nurturing People of Sea!
